How Vertical Farming can make food security more sustainable
With the world’s population rising and millions already facing food insecurity, Vertical Farming may be the answer to feeding us all according to Sustainability News.
Home Gardens/Vertical Farming, Hydroponics and Aquaponics
To feed the increasing population, not only does the productivity of food crops need to be increased in the existing arable land, but alternative farming techniques need to also be encouraged.

Food security: vertical farming sounds fantastic until you consider its energy use
Vertical farms aim to minimise water use and maximise productivity by growing crops “hydroponically” in small amounts of nutrient-rich water stacked in a climate-controlled building. But it’s important to recognise that the increased productivity of indoor vertical farming comes at the cost of much higher energy usage due to the need for artificial lighting and climate control systems.
This research paper examines the recent development of vertical farming with advanced precision monitoring and controlling system by the Internet of Things (IoT) applications. It also provides information about the opportunities and challenges of vertical-urban agriculture and how urban agriculture meets economic, social and educational needs.

Indoor vertical farms have been touted for their ability to grow leafy green vegetables like lettuce in warehouses year round. Bowery Farming, one of the U.S.'s largest vertical farm companies, says it can grow more than 5.5 tons of produce daily. And in a bid to expand its portfolio the company is adding a new crop to its roster — strawberries. About 90% of strawberries in the U.S. are grown in California. The state's strawberry harvest runs from early spring until fall.
