Place and liveability
-
Liveability is based on the principle of sustainability and smart and thus is sensitive to nature and the protection of its resource.
-
The economic, social, environmental and health benefits of urban liveability are now recognised by all levels of government, both in Australia and globally.
-
The term ‘liveability’ is widely used in Australia and across the world, yet it is rarely defined. We define a ‘liveable’ community as one that is:
‘safe, attractive, socially cohesive and inclusive, and environmentally sustainable; with affordable and diverse
housing linked by convenient public transport, walking and cycling infrastructure to employment, education,
public open space, local shops, health and community services, and leisure and cultural opportunities’ [1]
-
In an extensive review of liveability definitions used in academic and grey literature in Australia and internationally, we found some consistent factors.
-
Environmental factors play a fundamental role in shaping human health, and where we live, work and play directly influences our health in numerous ways.
-

The pandemic has caused huge volatility in our bi-annual Liveability index, which ranks 140 cities across five areas: stability, healthcare, education, culture and environment, and infrastructure. (For a full methodology, see page 6.) Data for this survey were gathered between February 22nd and March 21st 2021, when cities were at different stages of their battle with the pandemic.

Perth has proven itself as one of the best places to live on Earth. Unsurprisingly.
Australia has again fared well in a list of the world’s most liveable cities, but the most populous State capitals of Melbourne and Sydney have plummeted down the rankings.
